What is a bonus issue?

In a bonus issue, shareholders get extra shares free, in a fixed ratio. A 1:1 bonus gives one new share for every share held.

The company moves money from its reserves into share capital. SEBI allows this only from free reserves, the securities premium or the capital redemption reserve.[S1]

What is a stock split?

A split divides each share into smaller shares with a lower face value. The reserves do not change, only the number of shares and their face value.

What does a real bonus look like?

HDFC Bank issued bonus shares in a 1:1 ratio, with a record date of 27 Aug 2025.[S2]

Saksoft's board approved a bonus of one share for every four held on 7 Aug 2024.[S3]

Why do per-share numbers change after a bonus or split?

Earnings per share and dividend per share are divided by the new, larger share count. So they fall, even though total profit is the same.

Companies usually restate past per-share figures on the new basis, so years can be compared. Cityfort notes on the stock page when figures are restated.

Is a bonus the same as a dividend?

No. A dividend pays out cash, while a bonus moves money between reserves and share capital. SEBI's rules say bonus shares cannot replace a dividend.[S1]

Where do you see it on Cityfort?

What is a stock split?
Each share is divided into several shares of a lower face value, for example one share into five. The company's total share capital stays the same.
Does a bonus issue or a split change the value of my holding?
