What is segment revenue? Meaning, with real Indian companies

Segment revenue in plain English: how a company splits its sales by business and by country, what the rules require, with real company figures.

What does segment revenue mean?

Many companies run more than one business. Segment revenue splits total sales into those businesses, such as paints and home décor, or banking and insurance.

It answers a simple question: where does the money actually come from?

Which parts count as a segment?

Under Ind AS 108, a segment is a part of the business whose results top management reviews on its own.[S1]

It must be reported separately once it reaches 10% of revenue, profit or assets. Reported segments must cover at least 75% of outside revenue.[S1]

What about revenue by country?

The same standard asks for revenue from the home country and from all other countries in total.[S1] The examples below turn that into the share earned outside India.

Where do you find it in a filing?

Look for the segment table in quarterly results and the segment note in the annual report. SEBI's listing rules require results to follow Ind AS 108.[S2]

Segments are the company's own choice. So comparing segment shares across companies says more about how each reports than about the business.

Questions people ask

Who decides a company's segments?
The company does. Ind AS 108 builds segments from the reports its top decision makers review, so two firms in one industry can split their business differently.[S1]
Do quarterly results show segments?
Yes. SEBI's listing rules say financial results must report segments as Ind AS 108 requires.[S2]
